KZN food lovers set for potjie and Pinotage experience

Set against the scenic backdrop of Duma Manzi Wilderness & Wellness Retreat, the South African Potjie & Pinotage Event on Saturday, June 27.

After drawing wine lovers and food enthusiasts in its milestone Pinotage centenary celebration last year, the Pinotage Association is returning to KwaZulu-Natal with another bold showcase of South African flavour and heritage.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Duma Manzi Wilderness & Wellness Retreat, the South African Potjie & Pinotage Event on Saturday, June 27, promises a rich fusion of slow-cooked tradition and world-class wine; with competition spots for the popular potjie cook-off almost fully booked.

Only two of the 10 coveted cooking slots remain, as amateur chefs and potjie enthusiasts from across the uMgungundlovu District scramble to secure a place in the contest, which offers prizes including a luxury weekend stay at Duma Manzi’s Fish Eagle Lodge valued at R12 000.

Beyond the competition, the event offers a broader celebration of South African culture, pairing the country’s signature grape cultivar with the much-loved potjie tradition.

Day visitors will be able to enjoy potjie tastings for an entrance fee of R250.

For wine enthusiasts, an additional R250 unlocks access to the Pinotage 101 Masterclass, where guests can sample some of the country’s finest wines and engage directly with leading winemakers.

The session will feature industry figures including Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof, Abrie Beeslaar of Beeslaar Wines, Wade Roger-Lund of Meerendal Wine Estate, and Belinda Jacobs of the Pinotage Association. The event also forms part of uMgungundlovu Economic Development Agency’s (Umeda) broader strategy to promote tourism and economic activity in the region.

Through a diverse calendar of events; ranging from traditional horse racing and polo to car shows, art exhibitions, road safety initiatives and sporting fixtures, Umeda continues to position uMgungundlovu as a destination for unique and high-quality experiences.

Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa, the host venue, has itself gained recognition on the continental stage, having been named a finalist in the Best Ecologically Responsible Safari Property category at the 15th Safari Awards in 2025; placing it among the top two percent of safari operators in Africa.

Bookings are essential and can be made via email at [email protected] or via WhatsApp on 082 381 6079.

With limited competition spots remaining and strong interest expected, organisers are urging both participants and guests to secure their places early for what promises to be a standout winter event on the district’s social calendar.
