Legacy Cup tournament to honour local soccer legend ‘Baba’ Ndima

Ndima, a respected Siyamu resident, became a household name in local football between the late 1960s and mid-1980s

One of the founding figures of football in the Greater Edendale area, the late Johannes “Baba” Ndima, will be honoured during the Ndima Legacy Cup finals at Wadley Stadium on Sunday.

Ndima, a respected Siyamu resident, became a household name in local football between the late 1960s and mid-1980s. He was among the founders of Axe Killers FC, a club named after renowned Edendale resident and former South African boxing champion Joe “Axe Killer” Ngidi.

Beyond his contribution at club level, Ndima dedicated many years of service to the Edendale Football Association (EFA), where he fulfilled several roles, including official, scout, gatekeeper and groundsman.

He was instrumental in recruiting players, mobilising supporters and assisting clubs such as Axe Killers, Siyamu United Brothers (Subs), Caluza Aces and Siyamu City Limited.

He also played a key role in organising and promoting school football fixtures at the old Wadley Stadium, long regarded as the heart of football in Edendale.

EFA secretary and tournament organiser Sanele Vilakazi said all preparations had been completed for what promises to be a memorable celebration of Ndima’s contribution to the game.

“The stage is set and we can’t wait for kick-off. This is a big day for the EFA, the Edendale community and, most importantly, for honouring Baba Ndima’s legacy,” said Vilakazi.

He said Sunday’s programme would feature the tournament finals, exhibition matches involving football legends, and a gathering of former EFA administrators, officials, referees, players and executive members.

Vilakazi also acknowledged the support of sponsors Edendale Mall, JAM Clothing, Edendale Crossing Wellness Centre and uMngeni-uThukela Water.

Former player and EFA executive member Tom “London” Ngcobo believes the event will attract a large turnout of football supporters from across the Edendale community.

“Baba Ndima was respected by everyone. He built relationships with players, coaches, traditional leaders, schools and club owners,” said Ngcobo.

This is an opportunity for the football community to come together and celebrate a man who gave so much to the game.

The tournament gets under way with the semi-finals on Saturday before culminating in Sunday’s finals at Wadley Stadium. Proceedings are scheduled to begin at 12.30pm.
