ANC pledges support for KZN’s creative industry

The ANC said it remained committed to working closely with artists and cultural practitioners to address challenges facing the industry.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has pledged stronger support for the province’s creative industry, describing the sector as a key driver of economic growth, job creation and social cohesion.

The commitment was made during an engagement between ANC provincial leaders and representatives of the creative sector in Durban on Monday, where artists, musicians, actors, producers and cultural practitioners raised concerns about the challenges facing the industry.

The ANC said the meeting formed part of its broader programme to reconnect with communities and engage stakeholders on issues affecting economic development and employment opportunities.

Leading the engagement were ANC provincial convenor Mike Mabuyakhulu, first deputy convenor Bongi Sithole-Moloi and provincial coordinator James Nxumalo.

Speaking during the discussions, industry stakeholders highlighted several obstacles hindering growth in the sector, including limited access to funding, inadequate infrastructure, weak intellectual property protection and a lack of market opportunities for emerging artists.

The ANC said the concerns raised would help inform future policy discussions and interventions aimed at creating a more supportive environment for artists and creative entrepreneurs.

The party described the creative industry as more than an entertainment sector, saying it plays a significant role in preserving cultural heritage, promoting social cohesion and contributing to the country’s economy.
