Mfolozi immigration raid nets undocumented migrants

The Mfolozi Local Municipality has intensified its crackdown on undocumented immigration, with a high-impact law enforcement blitz in Mzingazi and Nzalabantu on Thursday that resulted in several foreign nationals being taken in for verification by immigration authorities.
The operation, led by Mayor Xolani Bhengu, unfolded as municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of the country face mounting pressure linked to growing protests over immigration enforcement and public concerns about undocumented foreign nationals in local communities.

Across South Africa, anti-immigration demonstrations and community-led calls for stricter enforcement have been gaining momentum, with some groups demanding tougher action from the government and local municipalities.
The developments have placed renewed focus on border control, documentation checks and municipal-level law enforcement operations.
In Mfolozi, Thursday’s coordinated blitz brought together municipal security, traffic inspectors and members of the South African Police Service in a targeted sweep of identified hotspot areas.
Officials confirmed that several undocumented foreign nationals were found during the operation and were subsequently handed over to immigration authorities for further verification and processing in line with national legislation.
Mayor Bhengu said the municipality was acting within the confines of the law and in response to growing community concerns and broader national developments.

“We are not operating outside of the law,” Bhengu said.
Our responsibility is to ensure safety, uphold municipal by-laws and work with relevant authorities to ensure that everyone within our jurisdiction is properly documented and accounted for.
He added that the municipality would continue to support multi-agency operations aimed at strengthening compliance and restoring public confidence in law enforcement efforts.
The blitz covered key residential and business areas in Mzingazi and Nzalabantu, where officials conducted spot checks, compliance inspections and documentation verification exercises.
The developments come at a time when municipalities are increasingly being drawn into the national debate on immigration enforcement, with pressure mounting from both community groups and government structures to ensure stricter compliance and visible policing interventions.
