Elderly Sassa grant recipient robbed and assaulted in Pietermaritzburg

The security group said the victim was approached by four suspects who allegedly assaulted her before stealing the cash in her possession.

A 65-year-old Sassa grant recipient was robbed and assaulted outside a supermarket in Raisethorpe, Pietermaritzburg on Monday morning.

According to Mi7 National Group, the incident occurred between 10 am and 10.30 am shortly after the woman had withdrawn her grant money.

The security group said the victim was approached by four suspects who allegedly assaulted her before stealing the cash in her possession.

The suspects reportedly assaulted the victim, causing her to fall and sustain injuries after striking her head and face on the pavement.

“The suspects then robbed her of the cash in her possession before fleeing the scene. At this stage, no further description of the suspects is available,” said Mi7.

The group said its Strategic Threat Response Unit (STRU) teams had been notified and were attempting to gather further information about the suspects.

Mi7 appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or who may have access to CCTV footage from the area to come forward and assist security providers or SAPS.

Residents were also urged to remain vigilant when withdrawing cash and to encourage elderly or vulnerable family members not to travel alone when collecting grants or visiting ATMs.

The victim is expected to open a case with SAPS for further investigation.

Anyone with information relating to the incident has been urged to contact SAPS or their nearest security provider.
