Durban counts down to 12th International Day of Yoga

The Durban Amphitheatre, overlooking the beachfront, will be used for the mass wellness event focused on movement, breathing and meditation.

Durban is in the final stages of preparation to host the 12th International Day of Yoga, with thousands of participants expected to descend on the Durban Amphitheatre along the Golden Mile on June 21.

Organisers say between 4 000 and 5 000 people are expected to take part in this year’s event, which has grown into one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most significant winter mass gatherings since its inception in 2014.

Large-format posters and banners have already been placed across the Greater Durban region and surrounding towns, signalling growing anticipation for the global celebration.

Chief co-ordinator Ishwar Ramlutchman Prince Mabheka Zulu said final logistical preparations were underway, with technical teams, volunteers and yoga instructors working in co-ordination to ensure a smooth sunrise programme.

“Durban has become the heartbeat of Yoga Day on the African continent,” he said.

This year’s celebration is more than a gathering it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to health, unity, and spiritual upliftment. Every participant will be part of a living tapestry of peace and wellness.

Zulu said the long-standing partnership between the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, the Consulate General of India, eThekwini Municipality and provincial stakeholders had helped elevate Durban’s profile as a key global Yoga Day host city.

Delegations from civic, cultural and youth organisations are also expected to attend.

He said the Durban Amphitheatre, overlooking the beachfront, provides a fitting setting for a mass wellness event focused on movement, breathing and meditation.

“Yoga transcends age, race, and background. Durban’s spirit of ubuntu aligns beautifully with the essence of yoga,” he said.

This year’s programme will include mass yoga demonstrations, guided breathing sessions, meditation and cultural performances, in line with global observances led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the theme “Yoga for Self and Society.”

United Nations theme highlights healthy ageing

According to United Nations guidance, the 2026 International Day of Yoga is observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlighting the role of yoga in supporting physical and mental well-being across all stages of life.

Because yoga can be adapted to different fitness levels and health conditions, it is widely regarded as an accessible practice that can support independence, reduce fall risk and improve quality of life.

Organisers in Durban say public interest continues to grow, with schools, community groups and fitness organisations confirming participation ahead of the event.
