Six KZN stars to represent country at World Cup
Their selection is proof of the province's rich football culture and the dedication of coaches, schools, communities and families who helped shape their careers
KwaZulu-Natal can take immense pride in its contribution to South African football, with six players from the province earning places in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
The tournament, which kicks off on June 11 and runs until July 19 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the biggest in Fifa World Cup in history, featuring 48 national teams.
While some of these six players have since established themselves elsewhere in the country and abroad, their football journeys began in KwaZulu-Natal.

Their selection is proof of the province’s rich football culture and the dedication of coaches, schools, communities and families who helped shape their careers.
Among the KwaZulu-Natal representatives are teenage sensation Mbekezeli Mbokazi, goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, defender Olwethu Makhanya, midfielder Thalente Mbatha and midfielder Sphephelo Sithole.
Former Bafana Bafana striker Siyabonga “Bhele” Nomvethe believes the strong KZN representation highlights the province’s role in developing top-level talent.
“To develop a player takes many years of patience and commitment. It involves parents, communities, schools and coaches working together. There is no shortcut,” said the KwaMashu-born former Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and African Wanderers star.
Former Durban Bush Bucks midfielder and ex-Maritzburg United coach Mlungisi “Professor” Ngubane echoed those sentiments.
These players are the pride of KwaZulu-Natal. Their success proves that this province continues to produce outstanding football talent.
Adding to the province’s influence in the national setup is Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele, who hails from Newcastle.
One of the most experienced members of the KZN contingent is goalkeeper Ricardo Goss. Born in Durban and raised in Chesterville, Goss has worked his way into the national team setup through years of consistency and determination.
The heart of Bafana’s defence also carries a strong KwaZulu-Natal flavour. Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi, who enjoyed an excellent season for both club and country, was born in Durban and first rose to prominence with Lamontville Golden Arrows before becoming a regular in the national team.
Joining him at the back is Durban-born Olwethu Makhanya, whose impressive development has seen him establish himself overseas with Major League Soccer outfit Philadelphia Union.

Perhaps the most exciting name in the squad is Mbekezeli Mbokazi. The teenage defender from Hluhluwe enjoyed a breakthrough campaign and heads to the World Cup as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents and a firm fan favourite.
In midfield, Orlando Pirates star Thalente “The Boss” Mbatha carries the hopes of his hometown of KwaMashu. Known for his energy, leadership and ability to influence matches, Mbatha has become one of the country’s most reliable performers.
Completing the KZN contingent is Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole. Originally from Ulundi, Sithole progressed through the province’s academy structures before earning a move to Europe, where he has continued to develop his game at the highest level.
