The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has temporarily suspended its strike action at the Msunduzi Local Municipality following a mandate from its members.
In a message circulated on Friday morning, Samwu Msunduzi chairperson Brandon George said the decision was taken at a general meeting held earlier in the day.

“Samwu collectively in line with the mandate from its membership at this morning’s general meeting have decided to temporarily suspend strike action,” said George.
The strike, which disrupted municipal services across Pietermaritzburg for more than two weeks, led to widespread electricity outages, refuse collection backlogs and service delivery delays in several areas.
It remains unclear when normal operations across all municipal departments will fully resume or whether further engagements between the union and municipal management are planned.
