On-duty Midlands EMS crew injured in serious Howick crash

A second crew member sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital for assessment.

A Midlands EMS crew member sustained serious injuries after the emergency vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a serious collision while on duty in Howick on Friday night.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 pm and left one paramedic trapped inside the ambulance, requiring specialised rescue equipment, including the Jaws of Life, to free them.

In a statement, Midlands EMS said the injured crew member received advanced life support treatment at the scene before being stabilised.

A second crew member sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the scene.

“They were transported to a Level 1 Trauma Hospital for further assessment and ongoing medical care,” Midlands EMS said.

Midlands EMS thanked fellow emergency responders for their swift assistance.

“Midlands EMS would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Netcare 911 and all emergency services who responded swiftly and professionally to assist our crew during this difficult incident,” Midlands EMS said.

“Your rapid response, teamwork, and dedication are greatly appreciated.”

The organisation said its thoughts were with the injured paramedics.
