Task team hunts gunmen after Major General Khan shot ahead of Madlanga testimony

Investigators are combing through CCTV footage from neighbouring properties and surrounding streets for clues that could help identify the attackers.

Police have assembled a multidisciplinary task team to hunt down the gunmen who shot a senior Crime Intelligence officer Major General Feroz Khan.

Khan was due to testify at the Madlanga Commission later this week.

Investigators are combing through CCTV footage from neighbouring properties and surrounding streets for clues that could help identify the attackers. No arrests had been made by Monday.

Khan was rushed to hospital after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle at about 23:00. Police have not disclosed how many times Khan was shot, and his current condition remains unclear.
Initial reports indicate that Khan was driving in Houghton when two suspects travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz drew alongside his vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Emergency medical personnel stabilised him at the scene before transporting him to hospital.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that a senior Crime Intelligence officer had been shot and that detectives were investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

“The South African Police Service can confirm that a senior Crime Intelligence officer was shot in Johannesburg on Sunday night. The officer was taken to hospital where he is receiving medical treatment. A multidisciplinary team has been established to investigate the incident, and no arrests have been made at this stage,” Mathe said.

Investigators are treating the shooting as a possible targeted attack, although the motive has not yet been established.

Khan has also been linked to a number of high-profile investigations and has faced allegations relating to the alleged unlawful dealing in precious metals, accusations he has denied.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Detectives are examining ballistic evidence and reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to trace the suspects.
