Here’s what you need to qualify for the Sassa Child Support Grant
Sassa noted that additional documents or information may be requested during the application process.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has outlined the eligibility requirements and supporting documents needed to apply for the Child Support Grant.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee living in South Africa.
- Live in South Africa with the child.
- Be the child’s primary caregiver.
- Apply for a child who is under the age of 18.
- Submit the child’s birth certificate.
- Not apply for more than six non-biological children.
- Ensure the child is not permanently cared for in a state-funded institution.
- Provide proof of school attendance if the child is between the ages of seven and 18. However, failure to attend school or provide proof will not result in the application being declined.

Applicants must also submit the following documents:
- A certified copy of a valid 13-digit South African ID for the applicant and spouse, if married. If unavailable, alternative identification accepted by Sassa may be used.
- A certified copy of a valid Section 24 refugee permit, where applicable.
- A certified copy of the child’s birth certificate.
- Proof of marital status, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, death certificate of a spouse or an affidavit in cases of desertion.
- The latest payslips, not older than three months, for the applicant and spouse, if married.
- Three months’ bank statements for all active bank accounts held by the applicant and spouse, if married.
- A bank confirmation letter or three months’ bank statements for the account into which the grant will be paid.
