Here’s what you need to qualify for the Sassa Older Person’s Grant

The Sassa Older Person’s Grant provides financial support to eligible South Africans aged 60 and older who meet specific income and documentation requirements.

Here’s how to know if you qualify

Qualifying criteria

To qualify for the grant, applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee living in South Africa
  • Be 60 years or older
  • Not be maintained or cared for in a state-funded institution
  • Not be receiving any other social grant for themselves
  • Pass a means test assessing both the applicant’s and spouse’s income and assets

Required documents

Applicants must provide the following when applying:

  • A certified copy of a valid 13-digit barcoded ID for the applicant and spouse (if married). Alternative identification may be accepted where applicable
  • Certified copy of a valid Section 24 refugee permit (if applicable)
  • Proof of marital status, such as a marriage certificate, death certificate, divorce decree or affidavit (in cases of desertion)
  • Latest payslips not older than three months for both applicant and spouse (if married)
  • Three months’ bank statements for all active accounts held by the applicant and spouse
  • Bank account confirmation letter or bank statements for the account where payment should be made
  • Proof of permissible deductions, including tax, UIF, medical aid, private pension or retirement annuity
  • Proof of assets such as property, investments, shares or endowment policies
