High-speed chase ends in R50,000 crystal meth bust

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it entered the town, the driver allegedly ignored their instructions and sped away.

Two people were arrested after a high-speed police chase ended with the seizure of crystal meth worth an estimated R50,000.

Police in Kenhardt in the Northern Cape on Friday evening. said officers were conducting crime prevention patrols at about 7 pm on the outskirts of the town when they spotted a Renault Megane suspected of being used to distribute drugs.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it entered the town, the driver allegedly ignored their instructions and sped away, triggering a high-speed pursuit.

During the chase, police allegedly saw the passenger throwing objects from the vehicle. After the car eventually stopped, the driver attempted to flee on foot and reportedly discarded additional items before he was arrested.

With the assistance of additional officers, both suspects were apprehended.

Police recovered and seized suspected crystal meth with an estimated street value of R50,000. Cash believed to be the proceeds of criminal activity, along with the vehicle, was also confiscated.

A 41-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested on drug-related charges and are expected to appear in court soon.

ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner Major General Monica Sebili commended the officers for their swift response, saying the arrests and drug seizure demonstrate that tackling drug-related crime remains a policing priority.
