uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) has distanced itself from the sewage pollution contaminating rivers flowing into Albert Falls Dam, saying municipalities — not the bulk water provider — are responsible for the failing sewer infrastructure blamed for the worsening environmental crisis.
The response comes amid growing concern over the state of the dam, which forms part of the uMngeni River system supplying water to large parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

The pollution in the dam has had visible economic and environmental impacts.
Earlier this year, concerns over possible effluent contamination contributed to the cancellation of the Albert Falls Bass Classic, with organisers warning of deteriorating water quality and declining fish.
UUW said recent reports have highlighted the need to distinguish between its responsibilities and those of municipalities.
The bulk water provider said municipalities acting as Water Services Authorities are responsible for maintaining sewer networks including pipelines, pump stations and managing sewer overflows, while UUW operates as a Water Services Provider, responsible for treating wastewater at designated plants and ensuring discharged effluent meets environmental standards.

While acknowledging that the Howick Wastewater Treatment Works has experienced operational challenges, UUW said investigations have found no evidence linking the reported pollution incidents directly to its operations.
“Addressing pollution in the Albert Falls Dam catchment requires a co-ordinated approach involving municipalities, UUW, regulators and industry, with a focus on improving sewer infrastructure, strengthening enforcement against illegal industrial discharges and enhancing wastewater management,” said UUW spokesperson Siyabonga Maphumulo.
