The petition, titled Saving Albert Falls, was launched by the DA, calling for immediate action by national, provincial and local government, warning that continued inaction could result in irreversible environmental damage and threaten water security in KwaZulu-Natal.
The DA said the situation had reached crisis point, adding that it threatened public health, drinking water quality, agricultural production, tourism, local jobs, aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity and KwaZulu-Natal’s future water security.

Albert Falls Dam is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most important strategic water resources. It provides water for thousands of households, supports agriculture, tourism, recreation, biodiversity, and contributes significantly to the regional economy.
The findings of uMngeni-uThukela Water’s May 2026 assessment of the Albert Falls and Nagle dam catchments revealed sewage infrastructure under severe pressure, with several sources of pollution still unresolved.

These include untreated sewage flowing through the Cedara wastewater treatment works into a wetland connected to a stream that eventually flows into the uMngeni River.
