AFU secures R326m asset forfeiture order against Maumela
Kubayi said the case also honours the legacy of slain whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, whose information helped initiate the investigation.
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has welcomed the Johannesburg High Court’s order to forfeit R326 million worth of assets linked to corruption-accused businessman Hangwani Maumela, saying the ruling demonstrates the state’s resolve to recover the proceeds of crime.
The order, granted by Judge Sahida Mahomed on Monday at the request of the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), targets assets allegedly acquired through the R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital corruption scheme, which investigators say diverted funds intended for public healthcare.
Kubayi said the case also honours the legacy of slain whistle-blower Babita Deokaran, whose information helped initiate the investigation.

The investigation was initiated following information provided by the late Babita Deokaran, whose dedication to accountability came at a great personal cost.
“May her soul rest in peace,” said the minister’s spokesperson, Palesa Rammitlwa.
Kubayi said the ruling reflects government’s commitment to ensuring criminals are stripped of wealth obtained through unlawful activities.
Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi also welcomed the judgment, describing it as an important milestone in recovering public funds lost through corruption at Tembisa Hospital.
He said more action must follow against public officials implicated in the scandal.
“We implore the Asset Forfeiture Unit to expedite the recovery process,” Motsoaledi said.
“We are also calling upon law enforcement agencies to complete the job through the arrest and criminal prosecution of Hangwani Maumela and his associates.”

The forfeiture order includes several luxury properties, among them an R88 million mansion in Bantry Bay, an R69 million estate in Sandhurst and two penthouses in Three Anchor Bay valued at R41 million.
It also covers a collection of luxury vehicles, including Lamborghini Aventadors, Lamborghini Urus SUVs, a Bentley Continental GT and a Regency 250 LE3 boat.
Maumela, who has repeatedly been linked to investigations into the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal, is also President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew through a previous marriage. The president has previously distanced himself from Maumela and the allegations against him.
