Duellists prepare for battle as the ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ State Championships return
Data collected by organisers also suggests a gradual increase in younger players entering the game, a positive sign for the future
South Africa’s top Yu-Gi-Oh! duellists are preparing to shuffle their decks and put their skills to the test as the 2026 State Championships get under way this month, with hundreds of competitors expected to battle for prestige, prizes and bragging rights.
The highly anticipated championships will be held across two major events, with Cape Town hosting the first leg on June 13 and 14 in partnership with The Battle Bunker, followed by the Gauteng event on June 20 and 21 in partnership with Dragon Town.

Organisers expect a combined 200 participants to take part in the tournaments, highlighting the continued growth of the competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! scene in South Africa.
The championships are considered Tier 1 competitive events and will bring together some of the country’s most dedicated players as they compete for a share of prize support, valued at R300 000.
Adam Prevo’st, from Unplug Yourself (Pty) Ltd, said that in addition to the main competition, participants will have an opportunity to take part in side events on the second day of each championship.
These include “Win-a-Box” and “Win-a-Mat” tournaments, offering players additional chances to test their skills and claim exclusive rewards.
The growth of the game locally has been particularly noticeable in recent years.

Prevo’st said attendance at the recent South Africa Open increased by more than 20% compared with previous years, reflecting growing interest in both casual and competitive play.
“We have definitely noticed an increase in the competitive scene across the country,” he said.
Efforts are now shifting towards recruiting new players and expanding the community even further.
Large pop-culture events such as Comic Con Cape Town and Comic Con Africa are expected to play a central role in introducing newcomers to the game and helping grow the local player base.
While Yu-Gi-Oh! has been around for decades, Prevo’st believe its appeal remains strong thanks to a combination of nostalgia and competition.
“The nostalgia of the anime definitely creates appeal for participants around the globe,” organisers said.

He added that incentives offered through local stores and large-scale tournaments continue to attract both new and experienced players.
Data collected by organisers also suggests a gradual increase in younger players entering the game, a positive sign for the future of the competitive scene.
For many players, however, the State Championships are about more than trophies and prizes.
They represent an opportunity to meet fellow duellists, test strategies against top competition and celebrate a game that has maintained a loyal following for more than two decades.
As the countdown to the championships continues, South Africa’s duellists are preparing for what promises to be two weekends of intense competition, strategic battles and memorable moments
