Howick rugby player appeals for aid
Lisakhanya has been selected for the Sharks Reitz Week squad and earned a place on the team's Dubai 7s tour
A young rugby player from Howick is appealing to the community for support as he prepares for the opportunity of a lifetime — representing the Sharks at the prestigious Dubai 7s Tournament later this year.
Lisakhanya Majola (17), a matric pupil at Howick High School, has been selected for the Sharks Reitz Week squad and earned a place on the team’s Dubai 7s tour.

The achievement marks another milestone in a rugby journey that began just three years ago. “I started playing rugby at 14 after being encouraged by a good friend, and what began as curiosity quickly became a passion,” said Lisakhanya.
As I developed and gained more experience, I realised that rugby was something I wanted to pursue seriously because of the opportunities it presented and the person it was helping me become.
Lisakhanya recently received his Sharks cap, an achievement that left his mother, Londi Duma Chiburi, overwhelmed with emotion. “I cried on both occasions, but I cried more when he was selected for the Sharks. It’s such a big milestone,” she said.
I was there when the trials were conducted. I saw how hard it was and how much talent was there, so it was such a huge achievement for my son.
Like many sporting parents, Chiburi admits that pride is often accompanied by anxiety. “I am always praying for the safety of my son. Every time he has a game, I ask him not to get hurt. I probably pray for him more than I pray for myself,” she said.

Lisakhanya said being selected for the Sharks Reitz Week squad and Dubai tour was a proud moment that validated years of hard work and sacrifice.
“When I found out I had been selected, I was overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude. It was a proud moment that validated the sacrifices, effort and commitment I have invested in my rugby journey,” he said.
The young player said the tournament represents far more than rugby. “What excites me most about the Dubai 7s Tournament is the opportunity to compete against talented players from different parts of the world.
“It will be an incredible experience to test myself on an international stage, learn from others and represent my team and community with pride.”
To make the trip possible, Lisakhanya has launched a Back-a-Buddy campaign to help cover travel, accommodation, tournament fees and related expenses. “Every contribution, regardless of its size, brings me one step closer to a life-changing opportunity,” he said.
