Lost dog returns home after six years missing
The family wrapped Terry in blankets, carried her inside, switched on a heater and offered her food and water.
A simple Facebook post asking if anyone had lost a dog in Hilton has led to an extraordinary reunion, solving a six-year mystery and bringing a much-loved rescue dog home against all odds.
Terry, a small mixed-breed dog from Retreat 2 Eden in Port Alfred, disappeared in June 2020 after bolting during a handover to her adoptive family in Howick.

Despite an extensive search lasting three months, she vanished without a trace.
Almost six years later, Hilton resident Taelin Haylett found Terry lying curled up beside a stream outside her family’s property.
“My one pit bull was really intrigued by one part of the fence line, but he wasn’t growling or barking like he normally does,” said Haylett.
When we went to investigate, we found Terry curled up on flattened vegetation next to the stream. She was absolutely frozen stiff.
Haylett said the dog was soaked, covered in scratches and ticks, and barely reacted when approached.
“She was so cold she barely responded to us. She just looked at us and whimpered.
“We realised this wasn’t a dog that had only been missing for a day or two.”

“She immediately went for the water. She was incredibly thirsty,” Haylett said.
Unsure what else to do on a Sunday, Haylett’s mother posted a photograph of the dog on a Hilton community Facebook group asking if anyone recognised her.
That post caught the attention of Lynne Wilhelm, co-founder and trustee of Retreat 2 Eden.
“We had seen countless photos of dogs that looked similar to Terry over the years, but this time was different,” Wilhelm said.
As soon as we saw the post, hope began to grow.
After watching videos of the rescued dog, taken by Renate Haussmann who collected Terry and looked after her for two weeks, Wilhelm recognised distinctive scars and markings.

“After nearly six years, those familiar features told us what our hearts had hoped for — we had found Terry.”
Wilhelm said Terry’s disappearance had never left their thoughts.
“Especially during the cold winter months, Terry was constantly in our thoughts. Johann and I regularly searched lost-and-found WhatsApp groups and social media pages, hoping someone might post a photograph of her. We never stopped praying that one day she would be found.”
Haylett said Terry quickly revealed her gentle nature while staying with the family before being reunited with Retreat 2 Eden.
She loved being warm, loved cuddles and just wanted to be held. I’ve never seen a dog so grateful.
Although saying goodbye was difficult, Haylett said knowing Terry was returning to people who had never stopped searching for her made it easier.
“It was incredibly comforting knowing she was going to people who genuinely knew and loved her.”
For Wilhelm, Terry’s survival remains nothing short of remarkable.

“It amazes me that such a small dog managed to survive alone for so many years,” she said.
“Above all, I believe it was the prayers of countless people that carried Terry safely through those years until she could finally be found.”
Terry has now settled back into life at Retreat 2 Eden and will never be adopted again.
“Johann and I always promised each other that if Terry was ever found, she would never be rehomed,” Wilhelm said.
We are keeping that promise. Terry has not simply returned to Retreat 2 Eden, she has become part of our family. She will spend the rest of her life surrounded by love, safety and the people who never stopped believing she would come home.
