Five seriously injured as truck crashes into vehicles in Canelands

The truck, which was transporting two trailers loaded with cornflakes, veered off the road and plunged down a steep embankment.

Five people were seriously injured following a crash between three motor vehicles and a heavy-duty truck in Canelands on Friday afternoon.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said they received 21 emergency calls between 5:26 pm and 5:29 pm reporting a major accident on Vincent Dickenson Road.

Spokesperson Prem Balram said officers and paramedics arrived at the scene at about 5:29 pm and discovered that a super-link truck and trailer had collided with two Toyota Hilux bakkies and a minibus taxi while turning onto Vincent Dickenson Road.

According to Balram, the truck, which was transporting two trailers loaded with cornflakes, veered off the road and plunged down a steep embankment.

“During the incident, one of the bakkies was crushed and partially trapped beneath the heavy vehicle,” said Balram in a statement.

Emergency responders worked for about 30 minutes to free two occupants who were trapped inside the crushed vehicle.

“The victims were eventually extricated and stabilised on scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital for further medical treatment.”

He said five people suffered serious injuries in the accident.

He said Ethekwini Fire Department, Metro Police, and several ambulance services assisted with rescue and emergency operations at the scene.

Reaction Officers remained on standby following the rescue efforts to secure the area and prevent potential looting of the truck’s cargo.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, he said.
