Man arrested with 150 live venomous scorpions in luggage

A 28-year-old man has been arrested at Cape Town International Airport after authorities discovered 150 live venomous scorpions hidden in his luggage during an intelligence-driven operation.

According to police, the arrest on Friday followed information received by members of the Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit working together with Cape Nature.

Police spokesperson for the Western Cape, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said officers responded to a tip-off that a person was in possession of scorpions at the airport.

A description of the suspect was circulated, leading to his swift apprehension.

Twigg said officers searched the man’s luggage after detaining him, where they made the shocking discovery.

“The suspect was found with 150 live scorpions concealed between his clothing in his bags. He was immediately arrested for possession of a wild animal under the Nature and Environmental Ordinance Act,” Twigg said.

The value of the scorpions has not yet been determined. Authorities confirmed that the animals were safely removed and transported to a secure facility for care.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 15.
