Ntuli encouraged residents across the province to line the route and support runners as they make their way from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has welcomed the more than 21 600 runners who will participate in the 99th Comrades Marathon, taking on the challenging up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

The Comrades Marathon remains one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-marathon events and a major contributor to KZN’s tourism and economic growth.

This year’s race marks the 99th edition of the iconic event, further cementing the province’s position as a leading destination for major sporting events.

Ntuli commended all participants for their dedication, discipline and determination in preparing for one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

“The Comrades Marathon is a true test of human resilience, perseverance and mental strength. We congratulate every athlete who has earned the right to stand on the starting line of this historic race. On behalf of the people and government of KwaZulu-Natal, I wish all runners a safe and successful race,” said Ntuli.

The premier assured athletes, visitors and supporters that comprehensive safety and traffic management plans have been put in place to ensure the smooth running of the event.

“We are confident that all necessary security and logistical arrangements are in place. Law enforcement agencies, emergency services and traffic management teams are fully prepared to support this world-class event,” he said.

We are also delighted that hotels and accommodation establishments in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas are experiencing exceptionally high occupancy levels, which will provide a significant boost to our provincial economy.

Ntuli encouraged residents across the province to line the route and support runners as they make their way from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

The premier also congratulated Richards Bay-based football club Milford FC on securing promotion to the Betway Premiership following a 1-1 draw against Magesi FC in the final promotion/relegation play-off match.

The promotion means KwaZulu-Natal will now have five teams competing in South Africa’s top-flight football division, alongside Richards Bay FC, AmaZulu FC, Durban City FC and Lamontville Golden Arrows FC.

Ntuli described Milford FC’s achievement as a victory for the club, the King Cetshwayo District and the province, adding that top-flight football is expected to bring further economic opportunities and sporting tourism to the region.
