WATCH | Fordyce predicts records amid ideal conditions as Steyn tipped for women’s win

Live from the Media Centre at Golden Horse in Pietermaritzburg, Witness sports reporter Jerry Barnes chats to Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce about this year’s race, the slightly shorter journey to Pietermaritzburg, his thoughts on race favourite Gerda Steyn, and the incredible atmosphere surrounding The Ultimate Human Race.

As thousands of runners make their way towards the finish line in Pietermaritzburg today, Fordyce shared his expert insight and excitement for one of South Africa’s greatest sporting events.

He said there has never been a Comrades Marathon quite as short as this, describing conditions as ideal for fast times.

“We have beautiful conditions. It’s lovely out there, cold in Pietermaritzburg. The chances are you are going to get a record in both the men’s and women’s race,” he said.

Fordyce also highlighted the introduction of a three-wave start, currently being tested ahead of next year’s 100th Comrades Marathon.

Looking ahead, he tipped Gerda Steyn as the favourite to win the women’s race, while saying the men’s race remains wide open.
