Police arrest over 700 suspects in weekend operation

During the operation, police set up a roadblock that resulted in the arrest of 21 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The SAPS in Gauteng, led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, conducted a successful multidisciplinary High-Density Operation Shanela II in the Honeydew and Cosmo City policing precincts in Johannesburg over the weekend.

During the operation, police set up a roadblock that resulted in the arrest of 21 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

A further 86 undocumented foreign nationals were apprehended for contravention of the Immigration Act, while nine suspects were arrested for possession of drugs. In addition, one person was arrested for allegedly employing an undocumented foreign national.

Authorities also shut down 14 liquor outlets for non-compliance with the Liquor Act, while three tampered motor vehicles were impounded.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department issued several traffic fines for various violations and non-compliance with road traffic regulations.

In a separate development, Gauteng Provincial Detectives arrested 684 wanted suspects overnight, including 139 individuals linked to crimes against women and children.

Police said the results reflect continued efforts to combat crime, enforce the law, and improve safety and security across communities in Gauteng.
