Early leader Rasoko forced to stop for treatment
Rasoko was leading the field as he reached the top of Cowies Hill and was running at an astonishing pace of about 3 minutes and 27 seconds per kilometre.
The 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon got off to a safe start on Sunday, with thousands of runners setting off from Durban City Hall towards Pietermaritzburg.
In a surprising early move, North West-based athlete Mahau Rasoko of Impala Running Club surged to the front of the men’s race.

The tactic is considered risky over the gruelling 85.77km Up Run.
Rasoko led the field over the top of Cowies Hill, running at an astonishing pace of about 3 minutes and 27 seconds per kilometre.
The Impala Running Club athlete is no longer in the lead and has come to a standstill on the route while receiving medical treatment after his blistering start.

In the women’s race, South African road running queen Gerda Steyn had already moved into the lead. Keeping a close watch on Steyn and tracking her every move was Dominika Stelmach, setting up what could be an intriguing battle as the race unfolds.
