Comrades Marathon 2026: Road closures, alternative routes and parking
Traffic entering Pietermaritzburg from Durban via the N3 can use the Ohrtmann Road or Chota Motala Road off-ramps.
Motorists travelling in and around Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, June 14, should expect several road closures and diversions due to the Comrades Marathon finish.
Road closures
- Old Durban Road (R103): Closed from Lion Park to Lynnfield/Scottsville.
- Oribi Road/King Edward Avenue: Closed from Washington Road to Alan Paton Avenue, outside Scottsville Mall.
- Alan Paton Avenue: Partially closed from Coronation Road near Sprytz and above Woodburn Mall. The southbound lane will be closed, with traffic diverted into Coronation Road.
- Alan Paton Avenue at Ridge Road: Completely closed.
- New England Road: Partially closed from Ridge Road outside St John’s Diocesan School for Girls. Only accredited vehicles will be allowed through to the Golden Horse Casino finish area.
- New England Road at Woodhouse Road: Partially closed, with access restricted to residents only.
- Boshoff Street: Partially closed from Bulwer Street outside Maritzburg Christian School. Only bailer buses and bailer minibus taxis will be allowed access to the designated parking area on Woodhouse Road near Scottsville Racecourse and the DUT Riverside Campus.
Alternate routes
Traffic entering Pietermaritzburg from Durban via the N3 can use the Ohrtmann Road or Chota Motala Road off-ramps.

Traffic travelling from Richmond to Durban can use the Richmond Road/Umlaas Road route via the Thornville turn-off.
Traffic travelling from Imbali, Edendale or the CBD to Ethembeni Cemetery or the N3 can use Ohrtmann Road or Chota Motala Road, and avoid Gladys Manzi Road and Scottsville.
Traffic travelling from Eastwood, Northdale, Thamboville and Sobantu to Scottsville, Bisley or Oribi can use Alexandra Road into Ritchie Road, then turn right into Oribi Road at Washington Road.

Parking for the Comrades Marathon
- St Charles College: Accessible from Durban via New England Road, turning right into Ridge Road.
- Scottsville Primary School: Accessible via New England Road, turning left into Ridge Road and then right into Milburrow Road.
- Woodburn Stadium: Additional parking will be available.
