Man arrested for alleged rape of 64-year-old woman

According to police, the incident allegedly took place shortly after midnight on Friday.

A 50-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 64-year-old woman in Malavuwe village, Limpopo.

According to police, the incident allegedly took place shortly after midnight on Friday. The woman was walking along a street near Sydney Simbai Kraal when a man known to her allegedly approached her from behind.

Police said the suspect allegedly assaulted and threatened the woman before forcing her into an incomplete house, where he allegedly raped her. He then fled the scene on foot.

The victim later reported the matter to police and, while officers were attending to the complaint, she allegedly spotted the suspect in the area. He was immediately arrested.

The 50-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of rape.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest.

“Anyone who subjects the most vulnerable members of society to inhumane acts must be severely punished.

“I implore the Criminal Justice System to apply the law accordingly without fear or favour,” she said.

Police investigations are continuing.
