WATCH | KZN prison boss Nxele in court over fraud, money laundering charges

Nxele, who is currently on suspension, was arrested by members of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services Regional Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele on Wednesday appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on fraud and money laundering charges.

Nxele, who is currently on suspension, was arrested by members of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on Tuesday.

According to the State, Nxele, amongst others, failed to declare income to the tune of R11 million.

Further, the State alleges that Nxele failed to declare various properties to the tune of R4 million.

Nxele, the State alleged, was living beyond his means, with various individuals depositing large sums of money into his bank accounts.

Wearing a black suit, Nxele was brought to the court at around noon on Wednesday.

He told the court that he has no previous convictions, nor does he have any pending criminal cases.
