What happens if your driving licence card expires?

Drivers are encouraged to renew their driving licence cards at least four weeks before the expiry date.

Motorists are being warned to check their driving licence cards as authorities ramp up enforcement against expired and invalid licences, with fines and even vehicle impoundments on the table for offenders.

Officials say drivers who fail to renew their licences on time risk facing enforcement action, including the possibility of having their vehicles impounded if found to be unlicensed.

The KZN Transport Department said motorists who fail to carry their driving licence could face a fine of about R500, while driving without a valid licence may result in a fine ranging from R1 000 to R1 200.

How can you renew your licence?

Drivers are encouraged to renew their driving licence cards at least four weeks before the expiry date. Those who renew after the expiry date are required to apply for a temporary driving licence at an additional cost while waiting for the new card to be issued.

Authorities emphasised that no driving test is required for renewal, but motorists must undergo an eye test and have fingerprints taken. Alternatively, an optometrist’s eye test report can be submitted at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC).

Applicants are required to bring their ID, old driving licence card or valid passport, proof of residence, and completed application forms when visiting their nearest DLTC.

Residents without standard proof of address must provide an affidavit or ward councillor confirmation, where applicable.

Renewed driving licence cards are typically issued within four to six weeks.
