UPDATE | One Midlands EMS paramedic discharged, colleague in ICU

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said one crew member had since been discharged and was recovering at home.

One of the Midlands EMS paramedics injured in Friday night’s serious ambulance collision near Howick remains in intensive care after undergoing surgery, while their colleague has been discharged from hospital.

The emergency medical service provided an update on Saturday evening following the crash, which occurred shortly after 9 pm on Friday while the crew was on duty.

One paramedic was trapped inside the ambulance and had to be freed using the Jaws of Life before receiving advanced life support treatment at the scene.

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said one crew member had since been discharged and was recovering at home.

“We are pleased to share that one crew member has been discharged from hospital and is continuing their recovery at home,” said Robertson.

Our second crew member remains in the ICU after undergoing surgery earlier today. They continue to receive specialised medical care, and we remain hopeful as they recover.

The cause of the collision has not yet been disclosed.

Robertson thanked the public, emergency services and colleagues for the outpouring of support following the crash.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has reached out with messages of support, prayers, and well wishes,” he said.

The overwhelming kindness shown by our community, colleagues, and emergency services family has meant more to our crew and their loved ones than words can express.

He appealed to the public to continue supporting the injured paramedic and their family.

“We kindly ask that you continue to keep our injured crew member in your thoughts and prayers as they face the road to recovery.”

The incident prompted a swift response from multiple emergency services, with Midlands EMS previously expressing its gratitude to Netcare 911 and other responders who assisted at the scene.
