Two critically injured in head-on collision

Midlands EMS crews responded to the crash, where they found two vehicles involved in a head-on collision.

Two people were critically injured in a head-on collision on the R103 near Lidgetton on Sunday, with one patient airlifted to hospital for urgent specialist treatment.

Roland Robertson, from Midlands EMS, said one of the patients was trapped inside a vehicle and had to be freed during a coordinated rescue operation, while another sustained critical injuries and required advanced life support treatment.

Due to the severity of the injuries, paramedics activated the Netcare Aeromedical Helicopter.

After being stabilised at the scene, the critically injured patient was airlifted to a Level 1 trauma hospital for definitive care.

The second critically injured patient was treated and stabilised before being transported by ambulance to a Level 1 trauma hospital.

Midlands EMS thanked the Lidgetton community for temporarily stopping a local soccer match to allow the helicopter to land safely.

The emergency service also acknowledged the assistance of community members, Howick SAPS, Howick Law Enforcement and other emergency responders.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
