Seven common mistakes motorists make that could invalidate insurance

If your licence has expired, been suspended or cancelled, your insurance cover may become invalid.

Your car insurance is there to protect you when the unexpected happens, but certain mistakes could leave you without cover when you need it most.

According to Pineapple Insurance, here are some of the most common reasons an insurer may reject a claim or cancel a policy.

1. Failing to disclose previous claims or accidents

Even if a previous accident was minor or happened several years ago, it must be disclosed to your insurer. Omitting this information could be viewed as non-disclosure or fraud, resulting in a rejected claim or cancelled policy.

2. Using your car for the wrong purpose

The way you use your vehicle affects your insurance risk and premiums. If your policy covers personal use but you regularly use the car for business, deliveries or ride-hailing services such as Uber, your insurer may refuse to honour a claim.

3. Driving without a valid licence

A valid South African driver’s licence is a legal requirement and a condition of most insurance policies. If your licence has expired, been suspended or cancelled, you could face criminal charges and your insurance cover may become invalid.

4. Modifying your vehicle without informing your insurer

Changes such as custom rims, performance upgrades, tracking devices or other modifications can affect your vehicle’s value and risk profile. If these alterations are not declared, your insurer may not cover the added value or could reject your claim altogether.

5. Providing incorrect address or parking details

Your residential address and where your vehicle is usually parked play an important role in determining your insurance premium. If you move, change your parking arrangements or improve your home’s security, update your insurer to avoid problems when claiming.

6. Allowing an unlisted regular driver to use the vehicle

Many insurers calculate premiums based on the risk profile of the vehicle’s regular driver. If someone else frequently uses the car without being declared on the policy, your claim could be declined, depending on your insurer’s terms and conditions.

7. Missing premium payments

Insurance cover depends on regular premium payments. If you miss a payment, your insurer may allow a short grace period, but continued non-payment could result in your policy lapsing or being cancelled, leaving you uninsured.

Other actions that could invalidate your cover

Pineapple added that insurers may also reject claims if they find evidence of fraud or intentional misrepresentation.

This includes submitting false claims, exaggerating damages, staging accidents or providing altered photographs or documents. Insurance fraud is a criminal offence and could lead to prosecution, hefty fines or imprisonment.

Another common issue is material misrepresentation, where policyholders provide false information that affects how their risk is assessed.

Examples include claiming the vehicle is kept in a locked garage when it is parked on the street, underestimating annual mileage, or listing yourself as the regular driver when someone else uses the vehicle most of the time.

To avoid problems, always ensure the information on your policy is accurate and notify your insurer whenever your circumstances change.
