Long-serving Msunduzi councillor, IFP leader Thinasonke Ntombela dies
Ntombela was an educator at Madlala Primary School, where he spent many years teaching and mentoring young people.
Long-serving IFP councillor in Msunduzi Thinasonke ‘Dennis’ Ntombela died on Monday following a short illness. He was 61 years old.
Ntombela, the son of late IFP stalwart David “Gandaganda” Ntombela, also served as an iNduna under Inkosi Khethokuhle Zondi of the Mpumuza Traditional Authority.
Ntombela dedicated more than two decades to public service in Msunduzi, first serving as a municipal councillor from 2006 to 2010 before returning as a proportional representation (PR) councillor from 2011 to 2016. He later served two consecutive terms as a member of the Municipal Executive Committee from 2016 to 2026.

Alongside his local government responsibilities, Ntombela served on the IFP’s National Council, where he contributed to the party’s strategic direction and organisational growth.
Before entering politics, Ntombela was a teacher at Madlala Primary School, where he spent many years teaching and mentoring young people.
IFP National Spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa described Ntombela as a dedicated public servant whose life was defined by service to his community.
“Cllr Thinasonke Ntombela remained steadfast in his commitment to servant leadership, democratic local governance and community development. He was known for his humility, accessibility, unwavering work ethic and genuine compassion for the people he served,” said Hlengwa.

“His passing is a profound loss to the Inkatha Freedom Party, the Msunduzi Local Municipality, the people of the Indlovu District and the many communities whose lives he touched through decades of selfless service. Above all, it is an immeasurable loss to the Ntombela family, who have lost a loving father, leader and pillar of strength,” he said.
The party said Ntombela was also a devoted member of the Methodist Church who treated people of all faiths with respect and dignity.
He is survived by his wife, three children — Zama, Noxolo and Cebisa — as well as his siblings.
Extending condolences to the Ntombela family, friends and colleagues, Hlengwa said Ntombela’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

“His legacy of service, humility and dedication to his people will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said Hlengwa.
Msunduzi Municipality Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla said the passing of Ntombela is a “painful moment” for Msunduzi Municipality and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
“He was a dedicated servant of the people who committed many years of his life to the advancement of our communities,” said Mzimkhulu.
Msunduzi Municipality Speaker, Councillor Eunice Majola said council has lost a valued member whose contribution and dedication will be remembered with great respect.

“Councillor Ntombela served this institution with honour and commitment, always carrying the responsibility of representing the people with dignity. His years of service reflect a deep commitment to democratic local government and community representation.
