Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the incident occurred on Embuthweni Main Road at Unit 4.

“Police responded swiftly to reports of a group of people who were breaking into container tuck shops on Embuthweni Main Road at Unit 4, Mpumalanga township,” said Netshiunda.

He said one suspect was arrested inside one of the tuck shops, while police cornered four others as they attempted to flee the scene.

The suspects, aged between 14 and 27, are expected to face charges of business burglary and malicious damage to property.

“They are still being processed and will appear in court soon,” said Netshiunda.

The arrests come as police maintain a heightened presence across KZN during the planned June 30 demonstrations.

Netshiunda urged march participants to remain peaceful and warned that criminal activity would not be tolerated.

“Police in KwaZulu-Natal are urging residents who will embark on marches to refrain from acts of violence, criminal activities and intimidation,” he said.

“As much as police are out there to safeguard the marches, they will be enforcing the law, and no lawlessness will be tolerated.”
