Fire at Curry’s Post landfill in uMngeni contained
uMngeni Municipality said preliminary assessments indicate that the fire may have been caused by spontaneous combustion. Officials added that other possible causes, such as glass or reflective objects magnifying sunlight and igniting dry material, have not been ruled out.
A fire that broke out at the Curry’s Post landfill site on Saturday night has been contained following an intensive overnight firefighting operation.
The blaze, which started in the garden refuse section of the site, prompted a swift response from uMngeni Municipality, uMgungundlovu District fire services and private sector partner, SAPPI.
Firefighters worked through the night to bring the flames under control, with the fire eventually contained on Sunday afternoon.
Crews remain on site to deal with smouldering hotspots and prevent any flare-ups.

The Deputy Mayor Sandile Mnikathi, Speaker Janis Holmes and Municipal Manager Mzi Hloba, visited the site and oversaw operations.
No injuries have been reported.
