UKZN retains USSA women’s volleyball crown
The victory marks the team's second consecutive USSA crown, following its championship-winning campaign in 2025.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) women’s volleyball team has successfully defended its University Sports South Africa (USSA) Games title, securing back-to-back national championships after defeating the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in the final.
The victory marks the team’s second consecutive USSA crown, following its championship-winning campaign in 2025.

The latest triumph was achieved with a blend of experienced players and new talent, including first-year students Anele Masondo, Hannah Enoch and Sreya Rajagopal, who all featured in their first-ever USSA final.
Head coach Marcellino Harold said this year’s preparations differed significantly from last year’s, as several senior players had graduated.
“Last year, we had a team of experienced senior players, many of whom have since graduated and left the University. This year, we welcomed several first-year players, creating a mix of experienced and new talent,” Harold said.
We had to prepare differently by building the younger players’ confidence and helping them believe they could win the tournament, and that became the focus of our training sessions.
Harold said retaining the title made the victory even more meaningful.

He described the achievement as more emotional and rewarding because the team had to find the right balance between experienced and younger players to make the squad successful.
Co-captains Busisiwe Maposa and Selina Naidoo praised Harold’s leadership, describing him as demanding but supportive, and credited his belief in the team for their success.
Maposa, who has captained the side for three years, said the squad worked tirelessly throughout the season.
We worked hard, did our best, and had fun along the way. Our team spirit is what really pulled us through.
The championship was further capped by national recognition, with Bontle Finger, Vishaya Naidoo and Jadene Moodley selected to represent South Africa.

UKZN players also dominated the individual awards.
Maposa was named Best Attacker, Vishaya received the Best Blocker award, while Moodley was recognised as Best Libero.
Harold said the team would enjoy a short break before turning its attention to the Tongaat Opens later this month and the National Club Championships.
He also commended Maposa and Naidoo for leading the team to consecutive national titles while mentoring the younger players.
UKZN Executive Director of Corporate Relations, Dr Normah Zondo, congratulated the team on its achievement.

“For our women’s team to win the USSA title for a second consecutive year is an outstanding achievement. It reflects their dedication, resilience, and the culture of excellence that defines UKZN,” Zondo said.
She said sport remained an integral part of UZKN’s commitment to developing well-rounded graduates.
“Accomplishments such as these demonstrate what can be achieved when talent is nurtured and supported,” Zondo said.
“We are especially proud of the three students selected for the national team and congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition.”
