Incumbent uMngeni mayor Chris Pappas will seek a second term in office after being unveiled as the DA’s mayoral candidate before hundreds of supporters at the Mpophomeni Sports Grounds on Saturday.

Pappas, who was received by the community with praise songs and music, said it was a day of celebration.
“Today is a celebration of what we have achieved together and a commitment to do more,” said Pappas.
Five years ago, the people of uMngeni made a courageous decision – which was decided by just 42 votes. Forty-two votes changed the direction of this municipality. Forty-two votes proved that every single vote matters.
He said they have built a strong foundation over the past five years, on which they can continue to build.

“When we promised jobs and a growing economy, youth unemployment fell by seven percent.”
“uMngeni was recognised as KZN’s number one municipality for access to opportunities and services.”
“We have never claimed to have fixed everything and never claimed that we could. There are still potholes to patch. Streetlights to replace. Trees to trim.”
“There is still much more work ahead. But today the foundation is strong. And because the foundation is strong we can keep building,” said Pappas.
One resident, Thandolwethu Buthelezi said that they have noticed improved service delivery in the town.

“We want Pappas to continue. He is always available. He will answer us when we need help or tell us who will help us. We have seen lights being installed and the youth have employment,” said Buthelezi.
Zuziwe Mashozi said since the DA has been in leadership, they now have employment in the area.
“Due to the governance we have now, businesses are coming to the area and that means we have work. We have been recognised for the decline in unemployment in KZN,” said Lushozi.
Following his speech, Pappas received a traditional isiZulu spear from Inkhosi Yamahawu Skhumbuzo Fakazi.
