Police task team hunts killers of March and March Gauteng leader

Somgaxa was shot in the driveway of his Greenfield, Johannesburg, home on July 4 and died in hospital five days later.

A multidisciplinary South African Police Service (SAPS) task team has been activated to investigate the murder of March and March Gauteng leader Andile Somgaxa.

Somgaxa was shot in the driveway of his Greenfield, Johannesburg, home on July 4 and died in hospital five days later.

His family and the organisation believe he was the target of an assassination linked to his role in anti-illegal immigration protests.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, in consultation with Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, assembled a team of experienced detectives and crime intelligence officers to prioritise the investigation.

Mathe said the team has been tasked with pursuing all leads to identify and arrest those responsible.

Dimpane condemned the killing and said police would leave “no stone unturned” in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The appointment of a multidisciplinary team underscores the seriousness with which SAPS is treating this matter.

“We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding this murder and to ensure accountability,” she said.

Dimpane also warned individuals and groups against intimidating, harassing or attacking foreign nationals, saying such actions are unlawful and would not be tolerated.

She expressed concern over what she described as vigilante-style behaviour being carried out under the guise of community activism.
