Illovo backs future talent through bursary programme

Illovo Sugar South Africa managing director Ricky Govender said the bursary programme was intended to do more than cover students' tuition costs.

Illovo Sugar South Africa has reaffirmed its investment in youth development by bringing together bursary recipients and senior executives at a recent engagement aimed at supporting students’ academic and career development.

The company’s annual Bursary Recipient Meet and Greet provided students with an opportunity to interact with members of Illovo’s executive leadership, gain career advice and learn more about the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

The initiative forms part of Illovo’s broader investment in education, which includes bursaries, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes and career development opportunities for young people from communities surrounding its operations.

Speaking at the event, Illovo Sugar South Africa managing director Ricky Govender said the bursary programme was intended to do more than cover students’ tuition costs.

“At Illovo, we believe that empowering young people through education and skills development is one of the most important investments we can make,” he said.

“Our bursary programme is about much more than funding studies. It is about unlocking potential, creating opportunities and building future leaders who will contribute to the growth of our economy, strengthen their communities and help solve the challenges facing our country.”

During the event, bursary recipients participated in small-group discussions with members of the company’s executive committee, where they received mentorship and insights into different career paths.

Among the students was University of KwaZulu-Natal Soil Science student Kuhlekonke Mpanza, who previously participated in Illovo’s STEM programme while in high school before being awarded a bursary.

Illovo said its education initiatives are aimed at developing local talent and creating opportunities for young people from communities near its operations, contributing to skills development and economic participation.
