Letters | Wishes for South Africa after the June 30 events

"How did all these people get in, in the first place? They sneaked in, paid their way in. We lost count and control. Then a low-key group called March and March decided to clean up for our inept government."

I normally do not comment on sensitive issues, however, the xenophobic one is a little close to home. I state upfront that all countries need proper border controls. How did we end up here? Last month these “unwanted” people lived and worked with us and near us. Yes, everyone must be properly registered.

How did all these people get in, in the first place? They sneaked in, paid their way in. We lost count and control. Then a low-key group called March and March decided to clean up for our inept government. Overnight the illegal foreigners became the enemy, out in the cold with just their clothes.

Not to mention the innocent children. The government set aside millions for the planned D-Day, June 30, set by others. No way is it Malawi’s, Zimbabwe’s and the other countries’ problem alone. Many of the people were employed.

Surely the employers who benefited from years of paying below the minimum wage could have and should have assisted as well? No doubt some foreigners were involved in crime, and “stole” SA jobs but we are talking about fellow human beings here. Whatever angle one takes, this is sad.

Sure, the dust will settle. My wishes are the following. First, South Africans fill all the vacancies, for the same or more money, and the same conditions or better.

Second, we also deport the thousands of foreigners who are in our jails. Third, we don’t go back to what happened here; crime levels will reduce; and visas and work permits will not be sold anymore. I did say “wishes”.
