SAPS KZN runners carry badge honour, anti-GBVF message into Comrades

The officers will join thousands of runners in the 99th edition of the Ultimate Human Race, tackling the 87.7 km up run.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba has rallied behind the 83 SAPS members set to take on Sunday’s Comrades Marathon, describing them as ambassadors for safer communities and the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

The officers will join thousands of runners in the 99th edition of the Ultimate Human Race, tackling the 87.7 km up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg while also carrying the message of community safety and resilience.

“As a runner myself, I know the rigorous programme that runners go through in preparation for a marathon. This being an ultramarathon, every detail matters,” said Makoba.

I am hereby wishing all runners who will represent SAPS KZN in the 2026 Comrades Marathon everything of the best. You have put your mind to it, you can achieve it and victory is certain.

She encouraged the runners to draw strength from their colleagues and the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

“You are made tough to withstand all challenges, and the Comrades Marathon is just but one obstacle that you have to conquer. Go out there and make the province proud.

“Whenever you feel like giving up, think about the 29 000 strong police army behind you, find strength from the 12 million KwaZulu-Natalians who are cheering for you. You will be running wearing the badge of honour, of tenacity and I believe that you will represent us well.”

Makoba said she and other senior officers would be waiting at the POLMED marquee at the finish line to welcome the runners.

I am confident that this year, some of you will grace the podium and be awarded for representing the SAPS well in the world’s toughest marathon. Always remember that you are running for all of us, for the badge.

She also thanked the support staff stationed at water points and along the route.

“To all supporting staff who will be at water points and cheering on the sidelines, I wish you well as you propel our heroes and heroines to achieve greatness.

“Remember that we are with you every step, every heartbeat. Good luck to all of you and go out there and show them what SAPS KZN is made of.”
