Fake traffic fine emails trick motorists in latest online scam

The RTMC warned that the email directs users to a fake website, identified as natis.online.services, which it confirmed is not legitimate.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a strong warning to motorists across the country to be on high alert after a scam involving fraudulent traffic fine emails began circulating online.

The RTMC said vehicle owners are being targeted by cybercriminals sending fake emails demanding immediate payment for alleged outstanding traffic fines.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and avoid clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information, as the scam is designed to steal money and sensitive data.

According to the RTMC, the fraudulent emails falsely claim to be official communication from the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) and pressure recipients into making urgent payments.

The corporation warned that the email directs users to a fake website, identified as natis.online.services, which it confirmed is not legitimate and is unsecured.

“The scam email demands immediate action to pay overdue traffic fines. The URL address is (natis.online.services). This is fake and a scam, and its connection is unsecured,” the RTMC said.

The RTMC further clarified that it does not issue fine notifications through unofficial online platforms or email links and urged motorists to verify any communication claiming to originate from official systems.

“We put it on record that the RTMC, through its online services website, does not send fine notices to motorists. Any fine notice received by a motorist purporting to be from the https://online.natis.gov.za/#/ should be treated as a scam,” the corporation said.

Motorists have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid responding to suspicious messages, and report suspected fraud to authorities.
