During the campaign, 15% of all sales made during the three-hour period were donated to the charity.
The Sandile Zuma Charity Run, established in 2022, brings together participants who run to disadvantaged communities to distribute food parcels to families in need.
While serving customers, Deputy Mayor Mkhize thanked the restaurant and community for their overwhelming support.
“This is really a great initiative and we are so thankful to McDonald’s for giving us the opportunity to be here and raise funds,” he said.
Reflecting on his experience behind the counter, Mkhize said he had gained a new appreciation for the work done by restaurant employees.
“Sometimes when we see a long queue, we think it’s because the employees are not working, but they are actually making sure every order is correct and served properly,” he said.

Founder of the initiative, Sandile Zuma, thanked McDonald’s and the residents of Pietermaritzburg for supporting the fundraiser.
Our focus is on giving back to communities in need. We run from one area to another, where we distribute food parcels to people in those communities. We started this initiative in 2022, and today’s partnership with McDonald’s has been incredible.
“Fifteen percent of all sales from 5pm to 8pm will go towards the Charity Run,” Zuma said.
He added that the funds raised will be used to purchase food parcels for distribution to communities in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas on September 19.
Participants in the charity event will take part in 5km or 21km runs.
