Sixth victim dies after horror R612 crash near Ixopo

The death toll from the horrific crash on the R612 near Ixopo has risen to six after another victim succumbed to injuries.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma confirmed on Sunday that he had received an updated report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) confirming the sixth fatality.
The crash occurred at about 9.10pm on Saturday on the R612 towards Ixopo when a VW Polo crashed into a roadside barrier. Five people – three women and two men – were initially declared dead at the scene, while another occupant was critically injured.

Following the latest development, all six occupants have now died.
Duma said a team from his office and the department’s road safety directorate had located the victims’ families and was making arrangements to visit them.
He again extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

The South African Police Service’s Accident Unit is investigating the crash, with a culpable homicide case having been opened as investigators work to reconstruct the collision and determine its cause.
