UPDATE | Man arrested after police sergeant killed

The suspect was arrested at his home on Sunday after police tracked him down, following the attack on two officers.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a police sergeant and the attempted murder of a police constable in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.

The suspect was arrested at his home on Sunday after police tracked him down, following the attack on two officers who had responded to a domestic violence complaint on Saturday night.

Police said the 41-year-old sergeant was fatally wounded with a sharp object, while the 37-year-old constable was pushed into a nearby hole and injured. The suspect allegedly fled the scene after the attack but later returned once the crime scene had been cleared.

The case is being investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi praised officers for their swift action in apprehending the suspect.

The arrest comes less than a day after police launched a manhunt following the deadly attack.
