Kusche surges late as Steyn closes in on women’s crown

Defending champion Gerda Steyn remains firmly in control of the women’s race and looks set to secure another victory.

After spending about 4 hours and 35 minutes on the road, the leading pack of the Comrades Marathon — running from Pietermaritzburg to Durban — is expected to reach the finish line at the Scottsville Race Course within the next hour.

In the men’s race, Mbuti Mollo of Maxed Elite was leading earlier, but is now unlikely to maintain his position to the finish. A strong group of former winners is close behind, keeping pressure on the front.

Runners have passed uMlaas Road with around 18km to go.

The men’s race then took a dramatic turn when hard-running George Kusche surged ahead around Polly Shortts, opening a gap and appearing to take control of the race as it heads towards the finish.
